Rebecca Joniskan: Avian Influenza—Indiana’s Collaborative Approach
06/25/2025

Avian Influenza is a devastating disease that kills millions of birds each year, driving up egg and poultry prices and causing millions of dollars in losses for poultry producers. One of the states hardest hit by this disease is Indiana, and the Indiana State Poultry Association as well as other state agencies have provided crucial leadership in developing and implementing strategies to prevent and minimize the spread of this disease.
Rebecca Joniskan has served as the President of the Indiana State Poultry Association since August 2020. In addition to her executive duties, she directs her work to the areas of policy and advocacy at state and federal levels; support of avian health programs; sustainability and environmental regulatory issues; economic development; fostering increased exports of Indiana poultry, eggs, and egg products; and supporting development of educational resources and opportunities of benefit to Indiana poultry producers through ISPA’s long-standing relationship with Purdue University.

In her role as ISPA President, Joniskan has seen these challenges firsthand and works diligently with producers when there is an outbreak in their flock. Her personal experience with this disease, implementation of prevention strategies, and the after-effects of an outbreak make her uniquely qualified to speak on this topic.

At the American Society of Agricultural Consultant’s (ASAC) Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana this November, she will share the most current information on this disease, its impact on the nation’s poultry and egg supply, and efforts to eradicate it.
