At the Conference: Corteva Tour

Corteva Agriscience (www.corteva.com) “…is a major global pure-play agriculture company, formed from the seed and crop protection businesses of DowDuPont, focusing on seeds, crop protection (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, biologicals), and digital agriculture solutions, aiming to enhance food security and farmer profitability through innovation, with headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. They are a leader in developing advanced seeds (like Pioneer) and sustainable solutions for yield protection and improved nutrition, while also uniquely investing heavily in range and pasture management.”
Participants in the ASAC Annual Conference held in early November were privileged to get a private tour of Corteva’s facilities, which were conveniently located just a few miles from the conference hotel. The tour included an overview of the processes used to determine which molecules had potential for use in their products, developing those compounds for producers to use and testing them for efficacy and environmental safety.
It normally takes 100,000 failures to find one viable molecule, 13 to 15 years to develop that molecule into a product, go through the testing and approval certifications necessary, and develop the production processes that will make it available to farmers. There are often hundreds of different iterations of a molecule to research during this process, which starts with learning the basic efficacy of a molecule—i.e. “Does it do anything?”
With the different types of testing that must be performed, Corteva has in their inventory every noxious week and insect species that affect crop production.
In addition to their seed, herbicide and pesticide products, Corteva continues to develop seed applied technologies that help seeds and plants thrive and protect them from pests.
